East Hill climbs away from the flat downtown into older character homes and long views taking in both lakes, and the businesses up there serve the people who live on the slope more than they serve passing traffic. Toro's Pub sits on that side of the city at 1220 Kalamalka Lake Rd.
Neighbourhood pubs live or die on being convenient, and the ones that work build a routine around themselves: the same faces on the same nights, a kitchen people order from without reading the menu, and a room that can absorb a group without a month of notice. What differs from one to the next is how much of the space goes to food service and how much to the bar. Anyone bringing family should ask about that directly, because licensing determines where minors may sit and it is not always the whole room.
Kalamalka Lake is the reason a good deal of traffic comes this way at all. Its water shifts through blues and greens across the summer, and the road along its shoulder carries people out toward the beaches south of town. That makes this end of Vernon a busier place in July than in January, which is worth factoring into any plan involving a table on a Friday evening.
