Britannia Brewing
About Britannia Brewing
Brewing has become one of the Okanagan's quieter industries, sitting alongside the wine that gets most of the attention, and Britannia Brewing works from 8991 Jim Bailey Rd on the Wilden side of Kelowna, up in the hills above the Glenmore flats. Production space tends to end up in locations like this rather than on a shopping street, because tanks, pallets and delivery trucks need room that a downtown block simply cannot spare.
Anyone planning a visit to a brewery should know what varies. Some run a full taproom with food and long hours, some open a small tasting counter a few days a week, and some are production only with growler fills at a side door. Whether children or dogs are welcome, whether there is table service, and whether tours run at all are site by site decisions rather than industry standards. A phone call before you set out is the difference between a good afternoon and a wasted drive up the hill.
The valley climate that makes the Okanagan good for grapes is also, in its way, good for a brewery. Hot dry summers create a long thirsty season, and the tourism that fills Kelowna from May to September brings visitors who want to try something made where they are standing. Winters here are short and mostly grey, which tends to shift the trade toward takeaway cans and local regulars. If you are driving out from the city, note that the roads climb, and in a cold snap the hillside routes stay slick longest.
