Freddy's Brewing
About Freddy's Brewing
Small breweries changed how people in British Columbia drink, and the Okanagan has taken to them about as thoroughly as anywhere in the province. Freddy's Brewing is found at 948 McCurdy Road in Rutland, in a building it shares with one other business, on a street set back from the main Rutland strip in the northeast of Kelowna.
What a brewery offers the public varies a good deal more than the beer does. Some run a full taproom with a kitchen attached, some pour samples beside the tanks and sell cans to take away, and the growler fill, where you bring a jug and have it filled from the tap, is common but far from universal. A tasting flight is the sensible way in if you do not know the range, since a brewery lineup usually spans something light and easy through to whatever the brewer has been experimenting with that month. The page at mccurdybowl.com covers the brewery side, and a phone call is the way to confirm what is pouring and whether anything seasonal has landed.
The valley's drinks industry was built on wine and the vineyards still pull most of the visitors, but beer has quietly filled in around it, particularly in districts where rent allows a production space with a room out front. Rutland is exactly that kind of district, large, practical and largely residential, with enough light industrial stock to make the arrangement work. It is also a short hop from the airport and the highway north, which suits anyone touring the valley rather than staying downtown.
