About Asuka Japanese Restaurant
At 227 Bernard Avenue, near the lower end of the street where downtown Kelowna steps down toward the waterfront, Asuka Japanese Restaurant occupies one of the storefronts on the downtown dining blocks. The lake is a couple of minutes on foot from the door, which makes this an easy stop before or after a walk along the promenade.
Japanese menus in a Canadian city cover a lot of ground, and it helps to know which end of it you are walking into. Some kitchens work primarily from a sushi counter, others put their weight behind ramen, donburi and cooked izakaya plates, and plenty carry a shorter list of both. If you are arriving with a group that includes someone who does not eat raw fish, or a child who just wants noodles, a quick call ahead settles the question before anyone sits down. The same call is the way to sort out seating for a larger party, which downtown rooms often handle by arrangement rather than on the spot.
Parking downtown comes down to the side streets and the structured lots a block off Bernard, and both tighten on warm evenings when the waterfront is busy. Winter is a different city here, quiet and easy to drive into. From the Mission or Rutland the trip takes ten to twenty minutes depending on the hour, and the lakeside cycling routes reach this end of downtown comfortably if you would rather leave the car behind altogether.
