About Summerhill Pyramid Winery
Climbing Chute Lake Road takes you out of the built up Mission and onto the Upper Mission benches, where the city thins into vineyard, orchard and open hillside at Kelowna's southern edge. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is up there at 4870 Chute Lake Road, near the Kettle Valley community, high enough that the lake below reads as a long silver line rather than a beach.
Hillside wineries carry a different set of practicalities from the ones on the flat. The road up is steeper, the last stretch of driveway may be gravel, and in winter benchland routes hold ice long after the valley floor has cleared. Once you arrive, what a producer offers ranges from a simple counter pour to tours, seated flights and food service, with some asking for a booking in high season and others taking walk ins. Tasting fees, group limits and whether children or dogs are welcome all differ, and one call settles the lot.
Time your visit with the season in mind. Late summer through October is harvest, the most demanding stretch of the year for anyone making wine, and also when the benches look their best. Midsummer afternoons up here are hot and exposed, so a hat and water are sensible if you plan to stand outside for long. The winery can be reached at 250-764-8000 and summerhill.bc.ca. Sort out a driver before you go rather than after, since Chute Lake Road is a long descent with corners that reward attention, and the bottom of the hill is a poor place to discover that everyone in the car has been tasting.
