About Sperling Vineyards
Very few cities in Canada have working vineyards inside the built up area, and Kelowna is one of them. Sperling Vineyards sits at 1405 Pioneer Rd, on the benchland south of downtown near the Pandosy district, where planted rows still interrupt the residential streets. The valley's growing conditions explain it: long hot summers, cool nights coming off the lake, and light soils that suit vines better than most crops.
A visit to an Okanagan wine producer is not one fixed thing. Some open a tasting room with a counter and a short flight, some run tours through the cellar, some sell only what is bottled on site while others pour by the glass on a terrace. Outdoor seating, whether children and dogs are welcome, and whether groups need to book are all things that differ from one gate to the next. Tasting fees are common and are often credited against a purchase, which is a fair question to ask on arrival rather than afterward.
Timing matters here more than at most destinations. Harvest runs roughly from late summer into October and is the busiest, least flexible stretch of the year for anyone making wine, while hours through the quiet winter months are usually shorter than in July. Phoning ahead saves a wasted drive in either season. If you are cycling, the flat routes through the Mission make this side of Kelowna pleasant on two wheels, though anyone planning to taste should sort out a ride home first. Carrying a case on a bicycle is a lesson people tend to learn only once.
