About CedarCreek Estate Winery
The benches above Okanagan Lake south of the city are where Kelowna's fruit growing turned into wine growing, and Lakeshore Road is the spine of that stretch. CedarCreek Estate Winery is found at 5445 Lakeshore Road, at the southern edge of the city in the Kettle Valley corner of the Upper Mission benches, where the ground climbs away from the water. The drive out from downtown takes longer than a map suggests in July, when the same road carries beach traffic, cyclists and everyone else touring the southern benches.
Wineries in this valley do several jobs at once. There is the growing and the making, which happen on a schedule the season sets rather than anyone else, and then there is the visiting side, which usually means a tasting room, a shop, and often somewhere to eat. What is being poured shifts as vintages sell through, and the busy months bring structured tastings and bookings while the quiet months tend to be more informal. Anyone planning a stop should ask whether tastings need a reservation, whether there is a fee, and how groups or children are handled, because the answers differ from one property to the next along this road.
Contact runs through 778-738-1020 and cedarcreek.bc.ca. Summers here are hot, dry and bright, and the Upper Mission benches sit high enough to catch a breeze off the water in the late afternoon. If you are coming from the airport or from Rutland, budget for crossing the whole city, since Lakeshore Road reaches about as far south as Kelowna goes before the hills take over.
