About Frequency Winery
Above Rutland the subdivisions of Black Mountain give way to open slope and long outlooks over the whole valley, and Gulley Road runs through that ground. Frequency Winery sits at 3210 Gulley Road, on the hillside side of the city where the ridge climbs away from the flats and the views open up behind you as you drive.
The name points toward wine, which is the industry visitors most associate with the Okanagan, and producers here differ from one another in ways worth understanding before you commit to the drive. Some grow all their own fruit, some buy it in, and plenty do both. Arrangements for visitors vary a great deal as well: a few operations keep a full room with scheduled tastings, others receive people by appointment, and some sell largely through their own site and through restaurants. Whether there is somewhere to sit, whether groups need to book, and whether anything can be tried on the day are all sensible questions to put first.
Call ahead on 604-715-2197, or read through frequencywinery.com, before you set out. The growing year sets the rhythm for most of the wine trade in this valley, and a climb like this is not a trip you want to make twice in an afternoon. Getting there means pulling up out of Rutland on the northeast side of the city, well away from the flat neighbourhoods and further still from the Mission or Kettle Valley at the southern end. Summer afternoons up on the mountain run hot and bright, and the outlook across the lake and the orchard benches is a fair part of why anyone climbs it.
