Vineyards inside Kelowna's built up neighbourhoods still turn up in unexpected corners, tucked between houses rather than out on a distant hillside. Spierhead Winery sits at 3950 Spiers Rd in the Lower Mission, sharing its address with another business, in the same flat, lakeside stretch of streets that holds the neighbourhood's beaches and the Mission Creek greenway.
Wine grown close to the lake reflects a particular kind of site. The ground here is gentler than the benches above town, but the lake itself moderates temperature, holding off frost and keeping summer nights a little cooler than the flats further from the water. For a visitor, the useful questions are practical ones: whether tasting is walk in or booked, whether there is somewhere to sit, whether food is available or whether you should eat first, and what can be shipped rather than carried. Most producers can arrange delivery within the province, which matters if you arrive by bicycle or fly home from the airport up the valley.
Getting there is straightforward compared with the wineries further up the benches. Spiers Road runs through the flatter part of the Lower Mission, past houses and the odd stretch of orchard that has not yet been built over, so the drive from the beaches or from downtown is a short one. A call before setting out is the simplest way to avoid a closed gate, and if you are visiting more than one property in an afternoon, arrange a designated driver or a car service before the first pour rather than after it.
