Van Westen Vineyards farms land at 2800 Aikins Loop in Naramata that the family has worked in one form or another for more than seventy years, well before the property carried a single vine. That long farming history before wine is common on parts of the bench where orchard land was gradually replanted to grapes rather than purchased fresh by newcomers to the wine business, and it is part of what locals mean when they describe a winery as old school rather than a recent investment property.
Tastings are poured from a building on site known as The Shed rather than a formal wine bar, open Thursday through Monday. A ten dollar tasting fee is charged per person, and rather than simply covering pouring costs, that fee is donated directly to BC Children's Hospital and the Naramata Play School Society, tying a routine wine tasting stop to two causes with a direct connection to the local community rather than to the wine industry itself.
The wine club has a waiting list rather than open enrollment at the moment, which is worth knowing before planning a visit around club pickup. General tastings remain open to walk ins during posted hours, and the winery can be reached at 250-496-0067 to check current availability.
