Deep Roots Winery farms at 884 Tillar Road in Naramata, on land the same family has worked for more than a hundred years across four generations. For most of that time the family sold grapes to other wineries on the bench rather than making its own wine, a common arrangement in a region where grape growing and winemaking are not always done by the same operation. The family produced its first estate vintage in 2012 and opened a tasting room in 2014.
The wine comes from two distinct vineyard blocks. The nine acre Hardman Vineyard grows Muscat, Gamay, Merlot and Malbec, while the eleven acre Rayner Vineyard grows Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Malbec and Syrah, giving the winery a wider spread of both red and white varieties than a single block operation typically manages. A severe cold snap in January 2024 destroyed the large majority of that year's crop, leaving less than a tonne and a half of Gamay to harvest, the kind of loss that a long established grape growing family is generally better positioned to absorb than a newer operation without decades of reserves and relationships to fall back on.
Given the family's long history as growers first and winery operators second, the tasting experience tends to be less polished and more direct than at some of the newer architect designed wineries on the bench. The winery can be reached at 250-460-2390 to confirm current tasting room hours.
