About Kettle Valley Winery
Small estate winery at 2988 Hayman Road in Naramata, named for the historic rail line, run by the same family since 1987.
Kettle Valley Winery sits at 2988 Hayman Road in Naramata. Tim Watts and Bob Ferguson, who run the winery together as brothers in law, bought the land in 1986 and planted their first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines the following spring, well before most of the bench's current wineries existed. Their first commercial harvest came in 1992, and the tasting room opened to the public in 1996.
The winery takes its name from the Kettle Valley Railway, the rail line that ran through Naramata between 1915 and 1961 and was, according to the owners, the one vantage point from which they could originally see all of their vineyard blocks at once. Naming a winery after a defunct rail line rather than the vineyard itself is somewhat unusual on the bench, and it points to how closely tied the area's wine history is to the transportation history that came before it, since the rail grade the winery is named for now forms part of the cycling trail that runs along the bench.
As a small, family run operation, hours can be tighter than at larger wineries nearby, so calling ahead on 250-496-5898 before a visit is a reasonable precaution, especially outside the main summer tasting season.
