Grey monk is an old nickname for the Pinot Gris grape, one of the varieties long grown in the cooler wine regions of Europe. Gray Monk Estate Winery sits at 1055 Camp Road, on the benchland above Okanagan Centre.
This end of Camp Road looks out over Okanagan Lake, and the slope is doing real work, since air drainage on a bench like this is part of why grapes ripen at all at fifty degrees north. For a visitor, an estate winery is generally three things at once, a farm, a production facility and a retail counter, and the counter follows the farm's calendar. Tasting rooms in the valley open widest between late spring and the end of harvest, then reduce their days through the winter. Checking where things stand before you set out is the single most useful habit for anyone touring wine addresses off season.
Okanagan Centre is the southern community of the district, a preserved early settlement of heritage buildings looking across the water, with the shore road below and orchards and vines behind. Camp Road strings several of the local wine addresses together within a short distance, so a visit here is easily combined with others, and the district is small enough that Carr's Landing at the far north end is only a short drive away. Kelowna lies south down Highway 97 and Vernon north, and the roads on this bench are narrow, curved and busiest through July, August and the harvest weeks that follow.
