Balsamroot turns the dry slopes above Okanagan Lake a hard yellow every April, and the arrowleaf shape of its leaves is one of the first signs the valley has come out of winter. Arrowleaf Cellars carries the name up on the benchland at 1574 Camp Road, in Okanagan Centre.
Camp Road runs through orchard and vine country, and small producers along it tend to sell close to what they currently have in bottle rather than carrying a large, constant list. Pours can be limited to what is available that week, and anything from a single small block can run out before the season is over. Okanagan Centre sits at the southern edge of Lake Country, a preserved early settlement of heritage buildings looking out over the water, and it rewards an unhurried visit. Lake beaches are a few minutes below, Wood Lake is a few minutes east across the highway, and the whole district measures only about ten minutes end to end if you stay on Highway 97. Cherry harvest in July and the grape harvest in September and October are the two busiest windows up on this bench, so a weekday visit in either month is a far more relaxed proposition than a Saturday in the middle of it.
