About Bernies
Bernard Avenue runs through the middle of downtown Kelowna, and the blocks along it hold the city's densest run of restaurants, offices and cultural venues before the street tips down toward the waterfront parks. Bernies sits at 353 Bernard Avenue, close enough to the lake end that a table there works as either the start or the finish of an evening spent near the water.
Independent restaurants in a tourist city tend to lead two lives. Through the hot months the rooms fill with visitors and the kitchens work flat out; through the shoulder seasons they belong to the neighbourhood again and the pace eases off. Menus and service times often move with that rhythm, so if you are bringing a group, arriving late, or working around an allergy, it is worth checking ahead rather than turning up and hoping.
Parking is the usual constraint on a summer evening downtown, particularly at the weekend when the beaches empty out and everyone goes looking for dinner at the same hour. The lots fill from the lake end first, so walking in from a few blocks north beats circling. Kelowna is a spread out city and most of its neighbourhoods are a drive from here, which makes a designated driver or a taxi part of planning any night on Bernard.
