West Kelowna neighbourhoods explained: nine names, one bridge

West Kelowna incorporated in 2007 and kept nine neighbourhood names to prove it: Westbank's old commercial heart, the Gellatly Bay waterfront, the Lakeview Heights wine bench and the suburban pockets between.

West Kelowna is the valley's youngest city and its most straightforward map: a string of bench neighbourhoods between the highway and Okanagan Lake, every one of them defined by how quickly the bridge comes up in conversation. Nine names cover it all.

Westbank is the old heart

Long before incorporation there was Westbank, and it still does the civic heavy lifting: the main street strip, the farmers' market lot, orchard counters like Paynter's Fruit Market and breakfast institutions like Donna's Fresh Cafe. It is the part of the city that feels like a town rather than a suburb.

Gellatly Bay holds the water

Below Westbank, the shoreline does the playing. Gellatly Bay's beach park anchors the family side of the lake, and the beverage trade lines up behind it: Crown and Thieves in its stone-clad cellar door, Frind Estate Winery on the waterfront, and Kind Brewing Tasting Room pouring for the beach crowd.

The Boucherie bench

Lakeview Heights climbs the slopes of Mount Boucherie, mixing estate wineries such as Quails' Gate Winery among some of the city's oldest orchard subdivisions. Its mornings run through bakeries like Bliss Bakery, and the view from the bench explains the real estate prices without any help.

The suburban ring

North and west, the names turn purely residential: Shannon Lake around its golf course and garden centre Bylands Garden Center, Smith Creek and Rose Valley climbing toward the park, Glenrosa filling the canyon behind them, Casa Loma keeping its lakeshore cottages and cake counters like The Cake Mama, and West Kelowna Estates holding the original bench farms, now down to corner cafes such as Cafe Bella Bean.

Rhythm note: rush hour is the bridge's opinion, not the neighbourhoods'. The region-wide pattern is explained in the valley-wide neighbourhood guide.
