Nursery stock is a slow crop. Trees and shrubs take years in the ground before they are ready to sell, which is why growing operations need acreage and why they sit where land is still open rather than in the middle of a commercial strip. Bylands Garden Center works from 1600 Byland Rd out in the Shannon Lake area, in the northwest corner of the city.
Buying plants well is mostly a matter of matching the plant to the site. The Okanagan is dry, hot in summer and colder in winter than its reputation suggests, and the west side adds its own variations, with the open benches above the lake behaving nothing like a shaded ravine lot in Smith Creek or an exposed slope up in Glenrosa. Take a photograph of the spot, note how many hours of direct sun it gets and how the ground drains, and be honest about how much watering you will realistically do. Those three things narrow the choice faster than any list of names.
Timing is the other half of it. The planting window opens early here and the hottest weeks of July and August are the worst possible moment to put anything new in the ground, so spring and early autumn are when the work should happen. Larger stock needs a plan for getting it home, since a potted tree is heavier and taller than people expect and rarely fits in a car. Sort that out before you choose, along with what care the plant wants in its first season, which is when most losses in this climate actually occur.
