Independent dining rooms differ from one another in ways worth a quick phone call. Reservations may be essential on a weekend and unnecessary midweek. Some kitchens close between lunch and dinner, some run dinner only, and last seating can be earlier than visitors from a larger city expect. If you are bringing a group, a birthday, a set of parents in for the weekend, ask about the largest table the room can hold and whether a set menu is used above a certain number. Dietary questions are better raised at the time of booking than at the table, since a small kitchen has more room to accommodate a request it knows about in advance.
The core sits on the flat below East Hill, close enough to Polson Park for a walk before or after, and parking is a short problem rather than a long one outside of the summer peaks. Vernon fills through July and August when the two lakes are working and the rail trail delivers cyclists to the north end of the valley, so weekend tables in those weeks go faster than they do the rest of the year. The quiet months on either side are the ones for a last minute plan.
