Barbering as a trade covers clipper and scissor cuts, neck and edge work, and beard and moustache tidying, and the way a shop runs its day is what separates one from another. Some keep chairs on a first come basis so you take a seat and wait your turn, while others book appointments and prefer you call. Some do both, with walk-ins filling the gaps between booked heads. It is worth asking which system is in use before you arrive with a restless child or a narrow lunch hour, and worth asking whether a particular barber is in that day if you have got used to one pair of hands.
Vernon is small enough that a standing haircut becomes part of a routine, slotted in beside the bank, the hardware run and a coffee. The city draws people down off East Hill and in from the surrounding townships for exactly that kind of errand, and the north end of the numbered grid catches a good deal of that traffic. Seasons show up here as much as anywhere else in town, with heads getting shorter as the valley heats up in July and the pace of a shop shifting once the summer visitors thin out and the local crowd has the place to itself again.
