Summerland Rodeo Grounds
About Summerland Rodeo Grounds
Ranch country still runs west of the bench, out through Garnet Valley and the backroads beyond, and rodeo remains part of the Interior calendar wherever that country persists. Summerland Rodeo Grounds occupies a site at 18709 Bathville Road in Prairie Valley, the inland basin behind the bench that also holds the town's schools and sports fields.
Grounds of this kind are seasonal by nature. Arena, chutes, stock pens and spectator seating sit quiet for much of the year and come alive for a handful of weekends, with gymkhanas, practice nights, horse events and club activity filling in around any main event. Anyone planning to bring a horse should check on stock water, footing, warm up space, overnight parking for trailers and whether the facility is spoken for on a given date, since local clubs and organisers usually control the calendar rather than a permanent office.
Access is the easier part of the trip. Prairie Valley is reached by road from the lower town without the switchbacks that serve the higher bench, which suits trucks and trailers, and the surrounding acreages mean horse traffic is ordinary here. Spectators should plan for open ground and full valley sun through summer, with hats, water and sunscreen more useful than a jacket until the evening cools off. Penticton sits across the lake for anyone travelling in, and the highway through Trout Creek brings visitors from the west.
