NOMAD Cider
About NOMAD Cider
Touring the western bench on two wheels or four turns up more cideries than most visitors expect, and the reason sits in the ground itself. Apples have been grown here for well over a century, and the fruit has to go somewhere. NOMAD Cider is at 8011 Simpson Road in the Giant's Head part of Summerland, on the slopes between the lower town and the mountain.
Cideries generally keep a tasting space alongside the production side, pour flights much as a winery does, and sell cans or bottles to take away. Beyond that they diverge. Dryness, carbonation, apple variety and whether other fruit is involved all shift from one maker to the next, and what is poured in the summer is not always what is available in winter. Anyone unfamiliar with the drink does well to start at the dry end and work across, which makes the differences far easier to taste than going the other way round.
Practical planning matters more here than it does in a city. The bench roads climb steadily, the distances between stops look shorter on a map than they feel on a bicycle, and summer heat on this side of the lake is the real thing. Carry water, plan fewer stops than ambition suggests, and settle the driving question before the first pour. Penticton lies across the water for anyone continuing on, and the highway through Trout Creek carries most of the southbound traffic, which leaves the bench roads to the people who came for them.
