About Back Door Winery
A tasting room visit tends to go better when you know what you are walking into. Back Door Winery is at 9752 Jones Flat Rd in the Downtown Summerland area, close to the heritage storefronts and the waterfront park at the foot of the bench. Signage on properties like these can be modest, so it helps to watch the numbers rather than looking for a large gate.
Wine producers in the valley range from operations crushing a few tonnes a year up to sizeable estates, and the difference shows in the visit more than in the glass. Small houses often keep short seasons, open on fewer days, and sell most of what they make at the door. Larger ones run continuous tasting through the summer and ship further afield. Either way the questions that save a wasted drive are the same. Is the room open this week, is a booking needed, and can bottles be bought without sitting down to taste. Beer and cider sometimes come out of the same building as wine on Okanagan properties, which is worth checking if your group has mixed tastes.
Summerland rewards a traveller who slows down. The bench roads loop back on themselves, the views open suddenly across to Penticton, and the heritage steam railway can be heard from a good part of the valley on summer weekends. Cyclists use these roads too, so drivers should expect to share them, particularly on the narrower stretches between the orchards.

Eating in Summerland: Victoria Road, the cove and the benches above
Summerland eats in three pockets that barely touch: the brick main street on Victoria Road, Shaughnessy's Cove down by the beach, and the winery kitchens on the benches above town. Where each one wins.
