About Laughing Stock Vineyards
Vineyards climb the benches on both sides of this valley, and the Naramata Bench northeast of Penticton is the stretch most people picture when they think of Okanagan wine. Laughing Stock Vineyards works from 1548 Naramata Road, out where the road leaves the city and follows the eastern shore of the lake.
Making wine and selling it are two different jobs under one roof. The growing year runs from pruning through to a hard, all consuming few weeks of picking and pressing in the autumn, while the tasting room side is shaped by the visitor season, busiest through July and August and much quieter once the weather turns. Access therefore varies through the year in ways worth checking. A call to 250-493-8466 before driving out will settle whether tastings need booking, how groups are handled, what a tasting costs and whether anything is on at the time.
The road out that way is one of the pleasures of the trip, narrow in places, lined with fruit and vines, with the water below on one side. Several producers sit along the same route, so a visit is easily built into a longer afternoon, and the city is close enough behind that nothing turns into a long drive home. Current information is kept at laughingstock.ca. Anyone new to the area should allow more time than the distance suggests, since the road does not encourage hurry.
