Barley Mill
About Barley Mill
A pub does two different jobs in a lake town. Through the winter it belongs to the people who live here year round, somewhere to sit through a hockey game or split a plate after work with someone you already know. Through July and August it fills with visitors who have spent the day on the water and want somewhere cool and dark to eat. Barley Mill sits at 2460 Skaha Lake Road, on the southern half of the city where the streets run down toward Skaha Lake and the beach at the bottom end of town.
Pubs in British Columbia vary more than the single word suggests. Some are built around food and welcome families in the dining side, while others lean toward the bar and keep to a nineteen and over room. Taps rotate, patios open and close with the weather, and the sports schedule shapes the busy nights as much as the calendar does. If you are booking for a group, or bringing children, or hoping to sit outside, those are all worth sorting out before you arrive rather than at the door.
Skaha Lake Road is one of the main arteries between downtown and the south end, so it is an easy stop whether you are coming off the beach or heading out toward the highway. Parking in Penticton is far less of an ordeal than on the coast, which makes an unplanned stop realistic instead of a small expedition.
