Anywhere sitting at the end of a real climb rather than a turn off the main road deserves to be treated as a destination rather than a detour. This is high, dry, exposed country, with rugged bluffs framing the valley below and very little shelter from either wind or sun, so a jacket in spring and a hat in August are both sensible. Views open out on the way up and there is usually somewhere to pull over, though shoulders are narrow and gravel in places. Coming back down, take it slowly, because the grade is long and it is easy to reach the highway junction faster than you planned.
