Okanagan Falls fills the long weekend with dogs, wine and one free lawn show
Blasted Church hosts Haute Dog Days Saturday and complimentary Sunday Service music, Christie Memorial carries the swimming, and Skaha Bluffs waits overhead.
Written by Warren Kroeker
Okanagan Falls keeps its Labour Day weekend small and good, which is the town's whole character in one sentence. Two confirmed winery events bookend Saturday and Sunday, a provincial-park beach carries the swimming, an ice cream window runs its own institution up the road, and the cliffs to the north hold some of the best climbing in the province. That is the whole board. It does not need more.
The short version
- Saturday goes to the dogs: Blasted Church Vineyards; the one with the steeple tilted at an angle no architect will defend.
- Sunday service, as advertised: The same vineyard runs its Sunday Service live music session September 6 from two until four, and it is complimentary.
- Christie Memorial and the south end of Skaha: Labour Day weekend is its last fully-populated stretch; after this, the beach belongs to locals and the odd brave tourist well into a September that usually keeps…
- Tickleberry's, and other institutions: Stat Monday thins hours as everywhere else; phone ahead on anything with a sign-in sheet.
- The cliffs overhead: Either way it earns a morning, and the cooler early-September air makes the approach kinder than August ever did.
Saturday goes to the dogs
Blasted Church Vineyards - the one with the steeple tilted at an angle no architect will defend - hosts its Haute Dog Days of Summer on Saturday, September 5, eleven thirty until two. Dogs encouraged, costumes tolerated, wine poured. If you have never spent a winery afternoon watching a dachshund in a bandana judge a poodle, this is your introduction. The tasting room's own art-filled interior is worth the visit even without the dogs.
Sunday service, as advertised
The same vineyard runs its Sunday Service live music session September 6 from two until four, and it is complimentary - one of the genuinely free things left on a long weekend anywhere in the valley. Bring a chair or claim picnic table real estate early; the lawn fills by the first set on holiday weekends. Between the two days, the winery alone justifies the drive south from Penticton, and the rest of this guide explains why you should stay for all three.
Christie Memorial and the south end of Skaha
The beach at Christie Memorial Park, an RDOS regional park since BC Parks handed it off in 2013, sits right at the mouth of the channel where Skaha Lake narrows back into the river system, and it is the swimming anchor here: sandy entry, warm shallows, room to spread along the shore. Labour Day weekend is its last fully-populated stretch - after this, the beach belongs to locals and the odd brave tourist well into a September that usually keeps the water swimmable anyway. Mornings are glass; afternoons bring the wind that makes the windsurfers further north happy.
Tickleberry's, and other institutions
Some towns have landmarks. Okanagan Falls has an ice cream counter that functions as one. If you pass through without stopping, understand that locals will ask why, and there is no good answer.
Beyond the cone, the practical businesses around town - the markets, kitchens, and services this directory's Okanagan Falls listings cover - handle everything a three-day stay actually requires. Stat Monday thins hours as everywhere else; phone ahead on anything with a sign-in sheet.
The cliffs overhead
Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park, just up the lake toward Penticton, holds one of Canada's premier rock-climbing areas - wall after wall of gneiss, routes for every grade, and a September climate climbers plan seasons around. Non-climbers can hike the ridges above the bluffs for views down the whole lake corridor. Either way it earns a morning, and the cooler early-September air makes the approach kinder than August ever did.
Labour Day here closes summer the way the town would want: a dog parade at a winery, free music on a Sunday lawn, a beach with sand still warm at six, and ice cream before the drive home. Some weekends try too hard. This one does not have to.
