Stain is not just thin paint. It soaks in rather than sitting on top, it fails differently, and it wants a different preparation, which is why deck and fence work gets quoted apart from a house repaint. UV exposure and standing water both break stain down from different directions, one reason a deck often needs attention on a shorter cycle than the siding above it.
Third Generation Painters strips what has failed, sands the surface back through the grey, repairs the boards that have gone past saving, and only then re-coats. Decks in cedar or pressure treated lumber, fences, gates, pergolas, exposed beams and front doors all fall under that heading. The write up is on stain and sealer work.
Kitchens are the other specialty, sprayed in a cabinet specific Benjamin Moore coating rather than brushed in wall paint, and detailed on refinishing kitchen cabinets.
