About Nichol Vineyard & Estate Winery
An estate operation grows its own fruit and makes wine from it in the same place, which ties everything about the business to one particular patch of ground. Nichol Vineyard and Estate Winery is at 1285 Smethurst Road, on the Naramata Bench above the east shore of Okanagan Lake, where the growing land forms a shelf between the upper road and the water below.
This bench is now among the most densely planted parts of the valley, with small lot producers stepping down the slope between the orchards that came first. Sites a short distance apart can behave quite differently, and that is much of the point for anyone tasting their way along these roads. Season matters just as much: what is open in a bottle in May will not be what is open in late September, and quantities from a small vineyard do run out.
Before driving up, phone 250-496-5962 or check nicholvineyard.com for whether tastings need to be booked, what a visit involves and how much time to allow. Smethurst Road is short and narrow like most of the bench side roads, so raise parking early if you are arriving with a group. The approach is the winding lakeshore road up from Penticton, and walkers and cyclists can reach this part of the slope from the Kettle Valley Railway grade above, which passes the Little Tunnel viewpoint and its long view down the water.
