Things To Do
Volunteer run community museum on Robinson Avenue preserving Naramata's orchard, rail and wine history through donated artifacts.
The Naramata Heritage Museum occupies a small building at 214 Robinson Avenue, close to the general store and the pub in the middle of the village. It is a non profit run entirely by volunteers, and its displays exist because residents have donated artifacts from their own households and family histories over the years rather than because a curator went out and acquired a collection. That makes the museum as much a record of what the community chose to keep as it is a formal historical archive.
Naramata's history runs through several distinct chapters before the wine industry that now defines the bench took hold: it was first an orchard and fruit growing community, and for several decades the Kettle Valley Railway connected it to the rest of the province before the line closed in 1961 and its grade eventually became the cycling and walking trail that runs along the bench today. A small volunteer museum in a community this size typically depends on that kind of layered local history, since there is rarely enough material for more than one telling of the town's story, and it has to cover all of it.
Given the volunteer staffing, hours are limited and tend to follow a seasonal schedule rather than standard retail hours, so a phone call ahead of a visit is worth making rather than assuming the doors will be open. The museum can be reached at 250-496-5709.
