About Vietnam Village
A restaurant whose name points somewhere specific still has to earn a lunch crowd on speed and consistency rather than on the name alone. Vietnam Village works that side of the business at 1957 Harvey Avenue, on the highway side of the city. The name suggests a Vietnamese kitchen, though what is actually on offer is worth asking about directly rather than assuming.
Restaurants that build a menu around a small core of dishes tend to separate themselves in the details rather than the basics, which is why two rooms working from a similar list can taste nothing alike. Practical questions are best asked when you order rather than afterwards: whether a vegetarian option is genuinely meat free, how a dish can be adjusted for spice, and how well an order travels if you are carrying it back to an office. Larger tables should say so on the way in, since a small room fills fast at midday.
This part of Harvey Avenue is Highway 97 in everything but name, a run of strip commercial with parking out front and a flow of traffic that thickens right through the summer. Orchard Park and the rest of the Dilworth retail sit a couple of minutes away, so lunch here folds easily into a shopping errand. Turning across the highway is the awkward part of the trip, and coming in from a side street is usually the calmer approach. Anyone driving down from the hillside streets above will find it a short run.
