About umé
Eating out in Kelowna usually starts with deciding which part of the city you want to be in, because the districts sit far enough apart that the choice shapes the whole evening. ume is at 1470 Harvey Avenue, on the highway corridor at the eastern edge of downtown, sharing that address with four other businesses.
The practical questions are the same wherever you go, and they are worth asking when you ring 778-484-7566. How far ahead do tables need booking on a weekend? What size of group can be seated without notice? Is there takeout, and does it run the same hours as eating in? Are dietary restrictions and allergies handled, and how much warning helps? A look at umefoods.com will settle some of it, but a phone call settles the rest, particularly in a season when the whole valley is full and every kitchen is running at capacity.
That season is a long one here. Kelowna's summer runs hot and dry from June well into September, visitors arrive for the lake and the vineyards, and every restaurant in the city feels the surge. Tables get harder to come by, parking along the Harvey corridor slows, and a walk in seat at seven on a Saturday becomes a gamble. The rest of the year is calmer, with short grey winters that empty the streets. If you are coming in from Rutland, the Mission or across the bridge from West Kelowna, a highway address is at least easy to find, which is not true of everywhere downtown.
