Ice Cream & Dessert
Sweet Cravings Gelato
About Sweet Cravings Gelato
A cold dessert sells itself easily enough on a hot afternoon, and Kelowna supplies plenty of those across a long summer. Sweet Cravings Gelato holds an address at 440 Bernard Avenue, on the main downtown street that runs down toward the waterfront parks.
Gelato and ice cream are not quite the same product, and the difference is worth knowing before you order. Gelato is churned more slowly, so it holds less air and comes out denser, and it is usually served a little warmer, which is why the flavour lands harder on the tongue. That also means it softens faster on a hot afternoon, so a cup travels better than a cone once you are more than a block from the door. Dairy free and sorbet options are common across this trade, though they differ from shop to shop, and it is a fair thing to ask at the counter.
Kelowna summers are hot, dry and long, and Bernard fills up accordingly, with the heaviest foot traffic in the evenings once the heat breaks and people drift down toward the lake. Outside that season the downtown pace changes completely, and a dessert counter is a different sort of stop in November than in July, so a glance at the shop's Facebook page is wise before making a special trip in the quiet months. Parking is easier a few blocks off Bernard, and the walk down toward the water is pleasant enough to make that the better plan anyway.
