About Summerhill Winery
Eating at altitude changes a meal, or at least it changes the view that comes with it. Summerhill Winery is at 4860 Chute Lake Rd on the Upper Mission benches, above the Kettle Valley streets at the southern end of Kelowna, where the ground falls away toward the water.
Dining rooms attached to wine estates run on their own logic. They are usually smaller than a city restaurant, far busier in summer than in winter, and built around a view that is at its best when the light is low, which makes an early evening table worth planning for. Reservations tend to matter more than they would downtown, since seating is limited and a small dining room cannot expand on short notice. Shortened service outside the summer months is common across the valley, so confirming before you drive up is simply sensible, and summerhill.bc.ca is the place to start.
The drive shapes the evening as much as the room does. Chute Lake Road climbs steadily from the Mission, and the last few minutes are hillside driving with corners that deserve attention on the way back down in the dark. Anyone planning to drink should arrange a ride in advance, because taxis do not cruise the benches the way they circle Bernard Avenue. Bring a layer even in August: the benches cool quickly once the sun drops behind the ridge across the lake, and an evening that feels warm at seven can turn chilly by nine. For visitors staying downtown, allow more time than the distance suggests, and more again on a summer weekend when the routes south are busy.
