Gneiss Climbing - OG Banks
About Gneiss Climbing - OG Banks
Between Harvey Avenue and the Dilworth slope the ground flattens out below the hillside homes that wrap Dilworth Mountain, and Banks Road runs across that lower ground. Gneiss Climbing works from 430 Banks Road, and the OG Banks tag in the name comes from the street itself.
Indoor climbing walls are their own species of gym. Most run bouldering, which needs no rope and no partner, and many add roped terrain on auto belays or top rope anchors; the two ask quite different things of your grip and your nerve. Newcomers normally sign a waiver, rent shoes and take a short orientation before getting on the wall, and route setting rotates, so the problem you failed last month may simply be gone. If it is your first visit, ask what a day pass includes, whether shoes and chalk cost extra, and whether a belay lesson or a check is required before you tie in.
An indoor wall is where most climbers build the strength and the technique in the first place, and it does not depend on daylight or on the weather holding. Banks Road is easy to reach from downtown, Glenmore and Rutland alike, with parking far less fussy than anything near the waterfront. Winter here is short and grey rather than bitter, which makes an indoor session the obvious substitute on a wet week, while the hot dry stretch of summer sends the same argument the other way. Bring water, tape and a little humility for the first evening.
