About Fisherman's Market
Heat is the thing to plan around when you shop for food in an Okanagan summer, and the drive home counts for as much as the shopping does. A cooler bag in the car is ordinary sense here rather than fussiness, particularly for anything perishable. Fisherman's Market sits at 1951 Harvey Avenue, below the Dilworth slopes on the commercial run that carries Highway 97 across the city. It is not a walking address. Almost everyone arrives by car, and the turn matters more than the block number when you are coming from the wrong direction on a busy afternoon.
The name points to fish, and buying from a counter rather than a chilled supermarket cabinet is a different exercise. Stock at a counter of that kind changes with what the boats have landed and what the season allows, so the sensible approach is to ask what came in most recently and build dinner around the answer, rather than arriving with a fixed plan and being disappointed. Whether something is fresh or was frozen at sea is a fair question and not a rude one, since a great deal of what reaches the interior travels frozen and is the better for it. A counter will also portion, skin and bone to order if you ask, which removes the least enjoyable part of the job at home.
Kelowna sits a long way inland from salt water, over the mountains and well up the valley, and that distance has always shaped what a fish counter in the Okanagan can offer. It also helps explain why specialist food shops here tend to stack along the highway, where the trucks can reach them easily. Dilworth itself is mostly hillside housing looking down over the city and the lake, with its commercial life gathered along Harvey at the foot of the slope.
