About Fantabulous Clothing and Accessories
Bernard Avenue is the closest thing Kelowna has to a main street, running from the highway down to the lake and closing to traffic for part of the summer. Fantabulous Clothing and Accessories keeps a storefront on it at 450 Bernard Avenue, in the middle stretch where independent shops sit shoulder to shoulder with restaurants and patios.
Small clothing shops survive on selection rather than scale. Where a chain buys the same run for every store in the country, an independent buys in ones and twos, which means the thing you liked last month may not be there this month, and the thing you do buy is less likely to walk past you on the street. Accessories follow the same logic, filling the gaps between outfits rather than replacing them. Sizing across the labels an independent carries is rarely consistent, so allow time to try things on. If you are hunting for something specific, a note through their Facebook page before you drive down will save more time than browsing will.
Parking is the perennial downtown complaint here, worse from June through September when the beaches fill and the festivals take over the waterfront. The upside is that Bernard rewards walking. Park once and you can work through most of the independent retail, stop for coffee and reach the lake in a few minutes, which is not something you can say of the strip malls out on Harvey Avenue or up in Rutland. Winter is quieter, grey more often than snowy, and a good season for browsing without the crowds.
