Doc Willoughby's Pub
About Doc Willoughby's Pub
Water Street runs parallel to the Okanagan Lake shoreline through the middle of downtown Kelowna, and Doc Willoughby's Pub sits along it at 1355. This is the civic and commercial heart of the city, a compact stretch of offices, restaurants and cultural venues that steps down to the waterfront parks, which makes it one of the few parts of a spread out city where walking between places is the sensible option.
A neighbourhood pub tends to fill several roles at once: somewhere to eat, somewhere to watch a game, somewhere to meet people without booking anything in advance, and the balance between those roles shifts through the day and from one house to the next. Downtown rooms in a tourist city also swing hard with the calendar. Through the hot, dry stretch of summer the sidewalk traffic on Water Street is heavy and licensed rooms turn over quickly; in the short grey winter the same blocks settle into something quieter and more local. If you are bringing a group, a call ahead of time saves standing around, and it is the moment to ask what can be seated together and whether any of the seating is outdoors.
Worth knowing before you come down: parking downtown is the usual small city puzzle of street stalls and paid lots, so leaving the car further out and walking the last few blocks is often faster than circling. The waterfront parks are a couple of minutes away on foot, which makes this an easy stop before or after an evening by the lake. Anyone coming in from Rutland, the Mission or the hillside districts should plan on driving, since Kelowna is friendly but genuinely spread out, and knowing which district you are aiming for saves half the trip.
