Eating in Lake Country: the highway corridor, Oceola and Carr's Landing

Lake Country eats along one north-south line: Winfield's highway plazas do the everyday cooking, Oceola Road holds the lake-side patisserie and sushi, and Carr's Landing hides a destination restaurant at the far end.

Lake Country is four communities pretending to be one town, and its food scene makes the most sense if you stop pretending. Everything worth eating sits along a single north-south line: Highway 97 through Winfield, then Oceola Road angling toward Wood Lake, then the quiet climb out to Carr's Landing.

Winfield does the everyday

The highway plazas carry the working-week meals. The strip at 9685 Highway 97 stacks three honest options together, with Taste of India, Viva Mexicana and Cream N Bean Coffeehouse covering curry, burritos and the morning coffee run without moving the car. Up the road, Greek House Restaurant on Woodsdale Road has fed this valley roast lamb and souvlaki long enough to be furniture, and L'Isola Bella Bistro on Berry Road cooks the Italian food people drive out from Kelowna for and then feel guilty about telling you about.

Oceola Road angles toward the lake

Turn off toward Okanagan Centre and the tone shifts from fuel to pleasure. At the corner of 11850 Oceola, Beat Patisserie bakes the best croissants between Kelowna and Vernon, and GOGO Sushi shares the building doing fish that no lakeside strip mall has any right to. A block west on Okanagan Centre Road, The Salty Caramel Kitchen sells the sweets that end up at every family gathering within ten minutes' drive.

Carr's Landing is the destination

Keep north along the lake and the road runs out of reasons to hurry. Out on Terrace View Road, Block One Restaurant sits inside the 50th Parallel estate, pouring wines grown on the spot with a dining room aimed straight down at Okanagan Lake. It is the furthest drive in this article and the only one worth booking ahead.

The brewery anchors the middle

Lake Country Brewing took over a former produce packinghouse right on the highway at 10058 and turned it into the community living room, taps and pizza and all ages until evening. On hockey nights it is the fullest room between Rutland and Vernon.

Rhythm note: Winfield eats early, Oceola eats well, and Carr's Landing eats slowly. For the whole valley's patterns, start with the regional food guide.
