About Kalala Organic Estate Winery
Up on the benches above Westbank the land was orchard within living memory, and a good deal of it has since gone to houses. What did not go to houses largely went to vines, which is how the west side came to have working farmland a few minutes from its subdivisions.
Wineries out on these back roads keep a different tempo from the ones on the main tourist run. They are quieter, they follow the season closely, and the pace can feel closer to a farm stand than a tasting counter downtown. Visiting rewards a little planning: the shoulder season and harvest both change what is possible, larger groups are much easier to accommodate with notice, and the roads up here are narrower and steeper than the ones along the shore.
Kalala Organic Estate Winery is at 3361 Glencoe Road, back off the busy stretch through Westbank and up among the growing ground rather than down by the water. The drive out is short but genuinely rural in feel, which is part of the appeal for anyone who has already done the lakeside circuit. Coming from Kelowna, allow for the bridge in summer, and for the fact that tasting rooms up here keep hours that follow the farm year rather than the clock.
