About Vernon Hostel
Budget travel through the Okanagan runs on a thin margin of luck: a bed in the right town on the right night, close enough to walk to the rest of it. Vernon Hostel sits at 3315 30 Avenue in the downtown core, which puts the main street, Polson Park and the bus connections within walking distance instead of a cab ride. The number to call is +1-250-503-8888.
Hostels differ from one another far more than hotels do, and the differences are worth asking about before you commit. Some run dorm beds only, some mix dorms with a handful of private rooms, and that split changes both what a night costs and how much sleep you get. Shared kitchens, laundry, luggage storage, bike storage and a common room are all normal features but none of them are universal. Check in windows can be narrower than at a hotel, since there may not be somebody at a desk around the clock. If you are arriving late off a bus or after a long drive up the valley, a call in advance sorts out how you get through the door.
Vernon makes sense as a base. Kalamalka Lake is minutes east, Okanagan Lake ends at the Landing to the west, and the Okanagan Rail Trail finishes its run here, which brings cyclists into town wanting somewhere cheap to sleep. Winter changes the crowd rather than thinning it, with the ski hill visible on the skyline a short drive away. Summer is the peak in a city that fills up with visitors, so book earlier than you think you need to.
