About Jen parents place
Visitors to Vernon often end up out at Okanagan Landing rather than in the middle of town, and the reason is the water. The Landing began as the steamboat port where Okanagan Lake comes to an end, and it has stayed its own place ever since, a stretch of shoreline with a marina, beaches and a slower manner than the city behind it. The address at 24 Garmisch Rd sits in that part of Vernon.
Staying out here is a different proposition from staying downtown. The lake is at the bottom of the hill instead of a drive away, mornings are quiet, and the trade off is that shops, restaurants and services are back in the core rather than around the corner, so a car or a plan is part of the arrangement. Summer is the busy stretch, when the beaches fill and marina traffic picks up, and anyone arriving in July or August does well to sort out where they are sleeping long before they set out. In the shoulder months the same shoreline empties, the swimming ends and the walking gets better.
The rest of the North Okanagan opens up from here. Kalamalka Lake lies on the east side of town, shifting between blues and greens through the summer, and Polson Park and the downtown shopping streets are a short drive up from the water. The rail trail finishes its run in this city, and a ski hill sits on the skyline for the other half of the year.
