About Savard Vines
Grapes came late to Summerland compared with cherries and apples, but the west bench has taken to them, and vineyard operations now sit among the orchards on the roads above the lake. Savard Vines works from 25200 Callan Road, on the Summerland side of the valley across the water from Penticton, in country that a federal research station has been studying for tree fruit and viticulture for over a century.
Small growers handle a long chain of work inside a short calendar. Pruning runs through the cold months, canopy management and irrigation fill the summer, and everything narrows to a few intense weeks at harvest. Whether a given operation sells fruit to other producers, makes wine under its own name, or does both is the sort of thing worth clarifying by phone on 250-494-1926, along with whether visitors are welcome at the property and when. Vineyard sites are working farms first, and access often follows the season rather than a fixed retail schedule.
Callan Road puts the property in Downtown Summerland, within the orchard and vineyard belt that rings the town and close to the marina and the highway south toward Penticton. Anyone building a day around the bench should allow for narrow lanes, farm traffic and the climb up from the lake. What is available and how to arrange a visit are set out at savardvines.ca, and a message ahead saves a wasted drive in the quieter months, when the valley slows down and much of the work moves indoors.
