Canoe sits on the flats east of Salmon Arm, a mill community with its own shoreline, schools and employment base rather than a suburb of the city. Calvan Motel is out that way at 4690 50 St, which puts a guest a short drive from the bay, the highway and the industrial side of the district all at once.

Timing counts for everything in the Shuswap. From late June through August the region fills with houseboat traffic and festival visitors, and rooms anywhere near the lake go early; the rest of the year the same rooms are largely working for trades crews and highway traffic. Booking well ahead for summer is the single most useful thing a traveller can do here. Canoe itself keeps a quieter feel than downtown Salmon Arm, and the drive between the two is short enough that staying out here costs very little in convenience.
