About Wild Ginger
Dinner downtown in Penticton is a short walk from almost everywhere in the core, which is much of why the Main Street restaurants stay busy through the year. Wild Ginger occupies 340 Main St, in the commercial heart of the city a few blocks back from the Okanagan Lake waterfront.
Penticton is the service centre of the South Okanagan, and the people eating downtown on any given evening are a mix. Residents from the surrounding neighbourhoods, travellers working their way up or down the valley, and day visitors from Oliver, Osoyoos and Keremeos all end up on the same few blocks. Summer changes the rhythm noticeably. Beaches at both ends of the city fill, the channel between the two lakes runs with floaters, and mid August brings the Peach Festival, all of which pushes evening demand up. The rest of the year the pace is slower, which residents tend to regard as the whole point of living here.
Restaurants vary in the ways that matter to a particular evening. Reservations, seating for a group, patio space, takeout and how late the kitchen runs are all worth confirming by phone before you commit a table of six to a Friday in July. Questions about ingredients and dietary needs are better put directly than guessed at, and if you are driving in from the Naramata Bench or down from Summerland it costs nothing to check that the doors are open on the night you have in mind. Kitchens in this valley move with the growing season, so what appears in September is not always what appeared in March, and that is part of the pleasure of eating in fruit country.

Penticton's shopping is smaller than Kelowna's and more its own thing: a Main Street of independents, specialty food shops that outclass their size, and Cherry Lane covering the mall tier.
