About Capitol Restaurant
Dinner downtown in Penticton generally means Main Street, which carries most of the city's storefronts a few blocks back from the water. Capitol Restaurant is at 270 Main Street, on the stretch that fills first on summer evenings when people come off the beach looking for a table and a bit of shade.
Independent restaurants are all different animals, and the useful questions are the same ones every time. Whether the kitchen closes between lunch and dinner, whether a table can be held for a group of eight, whether there is a patio and whether it is shaded by seven in the evening: these are the details that decide how a night goes. Menus in the valley also move with the growing season, so what makes sense in September is not what made sense in April.
Traffic through the room swings hard between seasons. July and August bring visitors from across the province plus the day trade that comes into town from Oliver, Osoyoos and Keremeos, while the winter months belong mostly to residents. That makes a phone call worth the trouble in the quieter half of the year, before driving in from the rural roads. Parking near the middle of Main Street is easier here than in bigger cities, though the blocks closest to the lake tighten up on festival weekends.
