About Below The Belt
Clothes shopping in a city of thirty-odd thousand comes down to a handful of independent storefronts rather than a mall crawl, and downtown is where those storefronts are. Below The Belt occupies 233 Main St, in the lower stretch of the commercial core alongside a run of other small shops, a few blocks back from the water at the north end of the city.
Independent clothing shops live or die on fit and on the conversation that goes with it. Sizing is not consistent between labels, and the value of a small store is that somebody can look at what you have carried to the counter and tell you honestly whether it works. Stock turns over with the season, which in the South Okanagan means a genuinely long summer of light clothing and a short, mild winter that never demands the wardrobe a prairie city does. If you are hunting for something specific, a call before driving in from Naramata or Summerland is the sensible order of operations.
A visit downtown rarely stands on its own. The blocks around Main Street hold cafes, restaurants and services within a few minutes of one another, parking is easy compared with the coast, and the beach at the top of the street means a shopping trip in July can end in the lake. That compactness is one of the practical pleasures of living here, and it is the main reason residents still shop the core rather than defaulting to a drive up the valley to Kelowna.
