About UBC Bookstore
Alumni Ave belongs to the university campus in the hills northeast of the valley floor, a good climb up from Glenmore and a genuine drive from the lake. The UBC Bookstore sits at 1138 Alumni Ave, sharing its street number with one other operation, which is normal on a campus where a single building holds several things at once.
Campus bookstores do a good deal more than sell books. Course texts are the obvious part, and they arrive and vanish on the rhythm of the academic terms, but the shelves usually also cover stationery, lab and studio supplies, technology accessories, and the branded clothing that ends up on half the people in the city. Anyone hunting a specific title should ask whether it can be ordered in and how long that takes, because the answer differs enormously between a current course text and something well outside the teaching lists. General readers are usually welcome, though the range on the floor is shaped by what is being taught.
The first two weeks of September and the opening days of January are the crush. That is when the whole campus is finding its footing, the queues are longest, and traffic up the hill is at its worst. Going at any other point in the term is a completely different experience. Visitors coming up from downtown or the Mission should allow for the drive and for parking, which on a hillside campus is its own small adventure. Transit runs the corridor and is often the calmer option in September.
