Mekong Fresh Asian Cuisine
About Mekong Fresh Asian Cuisine
Southeast Asian cooking spans an enormous range, and a kitchen working under that banner usually keeps several traditions on one page at once: noodle soups, rice plates, stir fries, fresh rolls and a column of vegetarian choices that has grown longer at almost every restaurant in the valley. Mekong Fresh Asian Cuisine cooks from 1030 Harvey Avenue, on the commercial spine that runs through the middle of Kelowna rather than down along the water.
Downtown is where the city keeps its offices, its museums and the waterfront parks, so the midday trade in this part of town mixes people working nearby with visitors walking up from the lake. Summers in the valley are hot and dry and the roads fill accordingly, which is worth remembering if you are driving in from Rutland or the Mission at noon in August. The kitchen answers at 250-763-8000, and there is more to read at mekongrestaurant.com before you go.
Ordering from a broad Asian menu goes better with a couple of questions asked up front. Heat is the usual one, since what counts as medium varies enormously from one kitchen to the next and nobody wins by guessing. If shellfish or fish sauce matters at your table, ask which dishes can be built around them. For a group, ask whether large parties need notice and which dishes travel well, because crisp fried items and brothy noodle bowls do not always survive a drive across town in the same condition they left in. Kelowna is spread out, and a ten minute trip in February can take twice that on a warm evening.
