About Kinton Ramen
A bowl of ramen earns its keep in a grey Okanagan January, when the valley trades snow for weeks of low cloud and hot broth becomes the most sensible thing on any menu. Kinton Ramen is at 570 Bernard Ave, on the downtown street that runs from the lake up through the heart of the city, in among the shops, offices and other kitchens that make these the easiest few blocks in Kelowna to eat in without moving the car.
Ramen is a specific kind of cooking and rewards a little understanding. Broth is the foundation, simmered for hours and usually offered in a few distinct styles that range from light and clear to thick and rich, with noodles, a protein and toppings built on top of it. Ordering generally involves a couple of decisions: which broth, how much heat, and whether you want extra noodles, egg or vegetables. If you have a dietary restriction, ask directly rather than assuming, since stock made from pork or chicken bones sits underneath a lot of what looks vegetarian on the surface.
Practically, this style of restaurant runs on turnover. Rooms are often small, seating can include a counter, lunch and the hour after work are the busiest stretches, and a short queue at peak times is normal rather than a sign that anything has gone wrong. Come slightly early or slightly late if you are working to a schedule, and be ready to eat while it is hot, because ramen does not wait politely for conversation. Downtown street parking is paid and time limited, so the parkades a block back are usually the easier option on a busy evening.
