About Chilango
Walking downhill toward the water is how most people cover the lower half of downtown Kelowna, and Chilango sits in that flow at 520 Bernard Avenue. The lower blocks of Bernard were rebuilt with wider sidewalks, which is part of why so much of the city's eating and drinking has gathered along this one street rather than spreading across the core. The waterfront parks are a couple of minutes further down the hill, and the offices and cultural buildings that keep the street busy on a weekday sit immediately around it.
Small rooms on a street like this differ more than their frontages suggest. Some are built around a counter and a short queue at lunchtime, others put out tables and expect people to stay a while, and what comes out of the kitchen can run from a short list of things to something closer to a full menu. Whether an order can be adjusted for a vegetarian or for someone avoiding dairy is better asked about than assumed, and the same goes for portions, since if you are ordering for a table it helps to know what is meant to be shared before all of it arrives at once.
Timing your visit is the other consideration. Bernard Avenue in July and August is full of visitors and an evening wait can be long, while the same block on a wet February evening is calm and unhurried. Metered stalls line the street and there are lots a block off it in either direction, though walking down from a hotel in the core beats moving a car twice in one evening. Checking before you set out is sensible either way, particularly outside the summer months, when downtown keeps a quieter rhythm than the crowds of high season would lead you to expect.
